What is the ANRA ?
Heritage of the American Nostalgia Racing Association Inc. The American Nostalgia Racing Association Inc. is an organization of racers and enthusiasts dedicated to advancing the sport of nostalgia drag racing. The ANRA Racing Program includes vehicles circa 1974 and before, designed and built or updated to meet modern safety specifications. Dragsters are front-motored, as opposed to the modern rear-engine designs of today. "Nostalgia" vehicles have kept pace with other motorsports and have broken all records previously established in the 1960's and 70's. The ANRA was formed in 1991 by Frank
Fedak of Southern California. Bob Webber and Jim Real purchased the organization
in 1994. Ownership was transferred again in February of 1998 to Bill McGloghlon,
who currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Soon, other
Board Members and Executive Staff will be appointed to carry forth the
tradition of commitment; promoting a positive image to both racers and
fans. A leader in nostalgia motorsports, ANRA offers racing opportunities
at all levels. Sanctioned classes and rules include all pre-1974 vehicles;
whether it is a Street-Legal sedan, a vintage Hot Rod, a Pro Gasser or
a nitro-burning Top Fuel dragster.
Under the direction of Bill McGloghlon, Jr. Thompson, Robert "Bones" Balogh and Rob Frazier, a national alumni has been created to honor "drag racing greats of days-gone-by" at future ANRA nostalgia events. The active ANRA Pro membership reads like the "who's who" of nostalgia drag racing; Jess Tyree, "Wild Bill" Alexander, Frank "Root Beer" Hedge, Gary Fore, Ron Hope and Don Green, to name a few. Most recently, the ANRA "Legends" Nostalgia Nationals, held in Phoenix, Arizona honored many of these drag racing celebrities of yesteryear. Over the years, ANRA has partnered with many of the nationally recognized car clubs and associations promoting car show, auto swap meet and drag racing events such as; the "Ford vs. Chevy Shootout" and "Capital City Mopars" Muscle Car Saturday. ANRA events encourage local car club participation, a "Cruise", or an "Extravaganza" with live remote radio broadcasts, celebrity interviews, entertainment, and professional race car and racer appearances.
Many of our racers and event highlights have been captured on video productions, such as "ANRA Action Outtakes" by the Jackson Brothers and "Nitromania", produced in conjunction with Full Throttle Productions. ANRA has been involved locally as one of the principal sponsors of the "Tribute to Lions Drag Strip"; bringing attention to the need for a readily accessible drag strip in the Los Angeles area. Since March 1998 the ANRA membership has doubled; fueled by renewed spectator interest and regional expansion of nostalgia events in the Southwest. ANRA is an active participant in the Specialty Equipment Market Association - SEMA Action Network (SAN) assisting in the preservation of vintage automobiles and parts. SEMA Action Alerts are posted and regularly updated on ANRA's website. A number of other services are also available on the website; including upcoming events calendar, race results, member classifieds, the complete ANRA Rulebook, and ANRA merchandise and logo apparel for sale. Member benefits include a regular newsletter, website access, auto decals, membership card, Official ANRA Rulebook, free classified ads, and discounts on event admission, merchandise, and nostalgia racing publications and periodicals. The American Nostalgia Racing Association Inc. is one of the organizations accepted for scheduling at NHRA member tracks, submits its rules annually for approval, and is sanctioned under the NHRA Alternative Sanctioning Program. While maintaining its independence, ANRA works in harmony with NHRA (and IHRA); participating in the Hot Rod Reunion and other venues important to the future of nostalgia drag racing. The American Nostalgia Racing Association Inc. is as exciting as the sport itself; ever changing and evolving from its automotive past, yet very aware of our importance to the future of motorsports. After all, in a world that has changed so rapidly as ours, it is difficult to assess the meaning of the term "nostalgia"; except to say that it is interpreted differently by someone thirty years of age, than someone of forty, or fifty, or sixty years old. Regardless of their age however, you will find them at ANRA events. Loosely defined, nostalgia is homesickness; a phase of melancholia due to the unsatisfied desire to return home. Perhaps that is why there is so much interest, a camaraderie between so broad a spectrum of followers. There IS a cure for this sickness, found several times a year in the form of ANRA Car Shows, Cruisin' and Racin'. And in 2004 you may find it throughout the country. . .
